Buck 65 - Superstars Don’t Love Video

BUCK 65 "Superstars Don't Love" from Travis Hopkins on Vimeo.

Back after a long holiday break, thought I'd post up this lovely little typographic movie-card-title inspired video by Travis Hopkins for Buck 65. I got this one from my favorite comics blog Bleeding Cool, surprisingly enough. As Travis says in his interview on Art of The Title,:
With “Superstars Don’t Love,” I wanted to show that kinetic type animation could be more about design than just your average “see and say."
. While the beats are minimal and the rhymes flow in a easy midwest nerd-core style, I think title design style of the video really pulls it all together and puts a bow on this tune. Otherwise I would have probably just breezed past it to be honest. I get it. It's lyrically nostalgic, musically forward yet stripped-down, and visually a vintage remix. Works for me.

Feast Of Attack - Demo Reel

Well my demo reel is finally done. There's a few things I'd like to change or polish, but I just really needed to get it out there and stop nitpicking at the details. Anyways, you can view it here, or check it on Behance - Feast of Attack Reel
The song is by The Dwarves called "Way Out". Shot list is available upon request.

My Behance page is here: http://www.behance.net/bombora , which also has some of my illustration work and design for the dubstep scene.

Blog Re-design

Please pardon the dust as, I'm switching to a new template. Some functionality will be lost and some will be restored. I basically got sick of looking at the old design, decided to try a new template, and then accidentally deleted the old one. Oh well, such is life. Anyways, the new design is based off of Masinop, which is hacked to worked with Blogger, so I'm expecting it to be buggy. Hit me up if you notice anything really strange, just comment on this post. Oh and there's gonna be a poll to see if you guys like it, or what. So far I'm digging it, but I'm not to sure about the white post area. Maybe a light gray would be less of a contrast and look more unified. Ok well, thanks for your patience... ez.

BIG UP #3 magazine review

Ok well I've sat and digested this mag for over a week or so, and I've concluded that it rad as hell. It definitely gets my seal of approval. In fact if you like art and dubstep in any way, shape or form, you should just stop reading this and go to their site right now and buy it. Make sure you tell them to mark Fragile and Please Do Not Bend on the package as my mix CD came in three pieces (they were cool enough to send me an mp3 version tho). Then again maybe your post office isn't run by rude boy hoods like mine is. All kidding aside, Big UP features dubstep heavy weights such as Emalkay, Goth Trad, Mary Anne Hobbs, SMOG crew, and mix CD by big bad KUTZ. There's also an interesting interview with electronica virtuoso , Amon Tobin. Art by Loic Sattle, Nik Ainley, Gary Fernandez and Blaine Fontanna. So topically, it's pretty spot on. I mean you don't get much better selection that that in my opinion. However the real reason I'm feeling this mag, is that in nearly every interview, they are able to dig in and find the story, and unearth a bit of truth. Its one thing to have a bunch of heavy hitters in the dub and art world and ask a bunch of generic questions and it's another to actually deliver interview that reveals some insight. I mean I usually don't read much about dubstep, I listen to it.

The Goth-trad interview in particular peaked my curiosity. He's from Japan so he has a completely different way of looking at music making then us Westerners. It seems it's more of a lifestyle choice, and very ingrained into his life, devoted, forward thinking and void of bullshit rockstar attitude. Mary Ann Hobbs of course was a fun read as well, cool to hear a bit about her LA Thrash scene background (which honestly I had no idea)... She just came across very cool and dedicated to her craft. I could see her evolving into the John Peel (~ used in respect) of underground dance music. Since I do motion graphics/video production stuff for a living, it was really cool to see Loic Sattler, whose Lysergid projects I'm familiar with. Got that shit bookmarked for inspiration. So I was immediately drawn to the interview( and the cover which is by him), and appreciated having a look under the hood, to check out that gnarly chromed-out engine that propels his illustrations. He's got a sharp eye, for color, composition and pattern, that's for sure. Anyways I'm not here to write a kiss-ass essay about every interview, article or feature. It's rad, just know that.

My one criticism would be the layout and the typography (the leading is too much and makes it hard to read). But I've been told this is changing next issue. So yeah not all of it is brilliant, but it's good enough that you feel like you get your money's worth. What's more important is that it's a stateside printed magazine that shows love to underground music and art in genuine way. That's something I need. And in a way, it helps validate the stateside dubstep scene and culture. Even if the name is a little bit 2003 (zing!). You can preview some articles on http://thebigupmagazine.com order the magazine and even download some wicked podcasts there. BTW the Kutz mix was dope and leaned toward the heavy techno-dubstep side.

Monster Musick updates

Ok Dj Evol's new label finally has a myspace page to call home. Check out Monster Musick on Myspace There's four new tunes up. Slaughterhouse (featured on the new 12th Planet mix) is going to be on the first 12" which should be headed for tests right now. White labels might be out in time for X-mas? Anyways check Load Media U.K. for distro details if you are interested. I'm the goon responsible for the label art and logo design. This is the first time I've really done any art for the dubstep world, so hope you all dig it. Brad likes his 60's grindhouse monster movies, so I just went with that and tried to give it a contemporary feel. If anyone is interested in similar work, hit me up, who knows I might have time.

Also I just want to let you all know I've been working on Evol's "Sickness" video as well. A work in progress will probably be posted in the following weeks. "Sickness" came out on as SMOG L.A. 1st vinyl release, also featuring the "Smokescreen" by 12th Planet.

BTW I'm predicting Out of Breath will be the next big wobble, tune, I'd like to know what you guys think, post some comments and let me know. Show me enough blog love and I could possibly start doing some vinyl give-aways. And everyone likes free records, right?
