EXCISION @ SmartBar 03-11-10

This ones gonna be huge. I know I've been hyping his Shambhala mixes for some time, but to see him live will be something else. I'm fully expecting some serious mid-range tear-outs. Don't sleep Chicago.

abstract science and dubfix are proud to welcome the chicago debut of
canada's EXCISION, alongside the return of 217mafia's DJ BELLY and
the smartbar debut of the mystery man known as AKADEMY.

combining the morphing bass lines of drum and bass, the aggressive
energy of metal, and the laid back vibes of hip hop, EXCISIONS’s
infectious style has driven him to become one of the most wanted
dubstep acts in north america. after selling out and repressing his
first 12" release in 2007--on EXCISION's own rottun recordings--the
demand for the dark side of dubstep became tangible. it's an ever
growing demand, with EXCISION and rotten releases dominating the top
ten sales charts at beatport and other digital retailers and crossing
over to new audiences. look out for collaborations with BASSNECTAR,
PENDULUM, dn'b heavy-weight SPL, and dubstep womp master DZ. at the
age of 22, this young canadian is one to watch: don't miss EXCISION's
chicago debut!

cutting his teeth in the party-friendly sister cities of
champaign-urbana--home of the university of illinois--dj belly aka
kevin miller has built an impressive resume in a few short years:
opening up for THE ROOTS, WU-TANG CLAN + PSALM ONE and as part of the
217mafia crew, bringing the sounds of dubstep downstate with their
massive "dubstep massacre" parties. with the move upstate to chicago,
dj belly promises bring his take on dubstep and hip-hop to a new

Outside 4th century BC Athens, in grove of sacred olive trees
dedicated to Athena, Plato's Akademia flourished. So named in honor of
the Athenian hero, Akademos, the great thinkers of the era, convened
to progress their fields of study. Today, Chicago dubstep producer,
aKademy is steady making advances in a different and altogether darker
set of arts and sciences. Akademy's early work with New York City's
Proper Villains (Southern Fried/Nightshifters/Flamin' Hotz) showed
immediate promise and piqued wide interest in his work from many of
the strongest voices for the movement. Yet the identity of Akademy
remains publicly unknown. With notes ranging from Squarepusher to
Pantera informing his style (in addition to the more traditional
elements of dubstep) his first single "Darknesses" wove these ideas
into a compelling first glimpse at the future of a genre. Now busy at
work, crafting his next missive, aKademy's pupils remain rapt in
attention, awaiting the next lesson.

Bassnectar- Cozza Frenzy Remix pack review

Bassnectar just dropped the Cozza Frenzy Remix pack, it's ll killer, no filler. If you order through the little shoppe at Bassnectar Labs and you get the exclusive bonus remixes of Cozza Frenzy, Boombox, and West Coast Lo Fi Rides Again by J Boogie, Amp Live, Mexican With Guns, Stylust, and SF’s own Roomate; otherwise it's just re-interpertations of Boombox and Teleport Massive by RJD2, Robot Koch, Son of Kick, DJ Vadim, and Stagga . All versions Boombox and Cozza are straight heaters, but to me, nothing gonna beat the Cozza Frenzy VIP I heard on Excision Shambala 2009 mix, sorry. That tunes just smacks it down, full stop. However there's some really sick mutations on here, well worth checking. I'm fully digging Robot Koch's glitch-hop spin on Teleport Massive, like something you'd hear as the end credit of some retarded show on Adult Swim (and I mean that as I compliment). Amp Live does a sick B-more Club workout on Boombox, that stands out as one of the really only 4 on the floor tune in the pack. For the dubstep heads there's Roommate's hyphy-ized version of Cozza, Noah D's drop bass take on Boombox, Stylust Wooble St. on Cozza, the grinding Teleport Massive Remix Dub and The Churn of the Century by Bassnectar. There's no one that doesn't bring their A-game to this pack; I can honestly say that I would rock any of these on a playlist. Check out the tunes for yourself and see what you think.

Kelly Dean 10 minute mix

Kelly Dean is part of the Smog crew and makes really cool textured dubstep. These impeccably produced tasty little tunes afre like ear candy for me. The standout tune being Teflon feat. Steady which is of course feature on the Dubstep LA Plastician mix. Got some more tricks up the sleeve on this one; if you're ready for an aural adventure, suit up and check out this otherworldy 10 minute showcase.

Bassnectar Labs - 2010 IDJ MIXTAPE

Fist off this morning got a hot soundclash, shifted beats mix from Bassnectar labs. It's got just about everything you can want from electronic music past, present, and future mixed, mashed and mangled to the nines. "We tore our favorite drum & bass to shreds, injected hip hop with some pogo-stick bass, amped up the tempo of dubstep, freaked out the gypsies, gave a nod to the dreamy 80’s and ended up similar to where we started off: omni-tempo maximalism strikes again." I've heard some similar mixes and mash-ups from guys like Craze, 12th Planet, Tittsworth, Girl Talk and so on... this seems more focused on the break beat, chopped beat side... less of a glitchy mess, more of a re-worked integration that flows well and just makes sense. Definitely got my attention by throwing a Pixies song in the mix. Enough blab, here it is:
