Plastician - April 27th - Esco Bars RIP

Plastician - April 27th - Esco Bars RIP No Nomad this week, but a big bad mix by Plastician. Dropping all hot plates, including new bits by Skream ("Metal Mouth"), a nice OM UNIT block and a unreleased acappella by the late Jade Gavin "Esco Bars" Defoe in RIP tribute. I find the key players in the grime scene's way of treating this tragedy/crime very polite, but also intelligent. May sound weird I realize. let me explain... but for those of you that don't know Esco Bars died from a head trauma as the result of a street assault. I don't know the details, as all I can't find was info from The Sun, and who knows how inaccurate that is. but yeah foul play was involved. Esco spit crazy bad man lyrics, often rife with references of violence, crime, drugs, ego etc... all the regular trimmings of the grime genre. Instead of making him into a martyr, example, or tragic figure... the circumstances surrounding his death have been rather downplayed by players in the scene(not so much by the punters unfortunately). Whether its out of respect, politeness or just common sense, is sort of refreshing really... and honors the individual and his craft rather than the crime which lead to his untimely death. The "live-by-the-sword-die-by-the-sword" accusatory rationalization of the crimes by press, haters, PMRC, police and whomever else, is just bullshit and sickening. Their media will probably use it to attack the scene just like the US did of hip-hop when Tupac and Biggie Smalls were killed, but with any luck, a united family in mourning will sour their attempts at discredit. Anyways respect to Esco and his skills... my sincere condolences goes out to the family and friends.

BIG UP #3 magazine review

Ok well I've sat and digested this mag for over a week or so, and I've concluded that it rad as hell. It definitely gets my seal of approval. In fact if you like art and dubstep in any way, shape or form, you should just stop reading this and go to their site right now and buy it. Make sure you tell them to mark Fragile and Please Do Not Bend on the package as my mix CD came in three pieces (they were cool enough to send me an mp3 version tho). Then again maybe your post office isn't run by rude boy hoods like mine is. All kidding aside, Big UP features dubstep heavy weights such as Emalkay, Goth Trad, Mary Anne Hobbs, SMOG crew, and mix CD by big bad KUTZ. There's also an interesting interview with electronica virtuoso , Amon Tobin. Art by Loic Sattle, Nik Ainley, Gary Fernandez and Blaine Fontanna. So topically, it's pretty spot on. I mean you don't get much better selection that that in my opinion. However the real reason I'm feeling this mag, is that in nearly every interview, they are able to dig in and find the story, and unearth a bit of truth. Its one thing to have a bunch of heavy hitters in the dub and art world and ask a bunch of generic questions and it's another to actually deliver interview that reveals some insight. I mean I usually don't read much about dubstep, I listen to it.

The Goth-trad interview in particular peaked my curiosity. He's from Japan so he has a completely different way of looking at music making then us Westerners. It seems it's more of a lifestyle choice, and very ingrained into his life, devoted, forward thinking and void of bullshit rockstar attitude. Mary Ann Hobbs of course was a fun read as well, cool to hear a bit about her LA Thrash scene background (which honestly I had no idea)... She just came across very cool and dedicated to her craft. I could see her evolving into the John Peel (~ used in respect) of underground dance music. Since I do motion graphics/video production stuff for a living, it was really cool to see Loic Sattler, whose Lysergid projects I'm familiar with. Got that shit bookmarked for inspiration. So I was immediately drawn to the interview( and the cover which is by him), and appreciated having a look under the hood, to check out that gnarly chromed-out engine that propels his illustrations. He's got a sharp eye, for color, composition and pattern, that's for sure. Anyways I'm not here to write a kiss-ass essay about every interview, article or feature. It's rad, just know that.

My one criticism would be the layout and the typography (the leading is too much and makes it hard to read). But I've been told this is changing next issue. So yeah not all of it is brilliant, but it's good enough that you feel like you get your money's worth. What's more important is that it's a stateside printed magazine that shows love to underground music and art in genuine way. That's something I need. And in a way, it helps validate the stateside dubstep scene and culture. Even if the name is a little bit 2003 (zing!). You can preview some articles on http://thebigupmagazine.com order the magazine and even download some wicked podcasts there. BTW the Kutz mix was dope and leaned toward the heavy techno-dubstep side.

"Wake of The Dead" mix by by Grym

I'm feeling the selection on this one, although I'm not too sure on the MC. kind of ruined it for me in spots to be honest. I guess I just don't get the point of an MC on studio mix. I mean live or on radio, they are there to hype the crowd and add to vibe (with shout outs and what not). I was thought of a studio mix as more of a showcase of tunes, so an MC detracts attention from that. He's not particularly bad, just not exceptional. Anyways the tunes from SPL, Anti-Serum, Roomate, and Hollow Point are all sick. Worth a listen for that alone.

3RDEYE Triple J Sound Lab Mix

My buddy James, whom I went to school with in Australia, got a dubstep project going and has new mix up. It's of the deep meditation variety, going heavy into dark vibes, but still moving enough to rock at a club. I'm feeling it... granted it less aggro than I'm used to, but it was nice for the bit of a hangover I had today. Big up James, good to hear you're still pushing sick tunes.

FWD APril 19th Skream and Plastician

SKREAM @ FWD APRIL 19th
PLASTICIAN @ FWD APRIL 19TH

Man, sounds like a killer night, I need to make out to UK again one of this days and hit a proper dubstep event. *edit been listening to the Skream one over and over again. not the best mixing but man, tunes! @5 minutes, "Metal Mouth" standard skream oskillator type goodness. @14:00 minute mark "Clap your Hands" crazy techno/hardcore inspired tune followed by the "No Future" Instramental Skream tear-out remix... wicked riddims. Then @ 21:00 "What The Fuck are You Looking AT" machine gun wobbler. Distorted in typical Skream fashion. I basically listen to this mix for those tunes. GAH! tear down the walls!

Plastician & Nomad - 6th April RINSE FM!

Plastician smacks it down on this one. Highlights include the return of Nomad, MRK1's "Talk to Frank", and "Act like You Know"--? Not sure the info on the last one, but it's a terror with a nice vocal line. Lots of big upfront tunes on this mix, and for that reason alone you should download Plastician & Nomad - 6th April RINSE FM!
